Barbantonis

A family taverna that answers “are you open?” and “what’s on the menu?” before anyone has to pick up the phone.

The brief

Barbantonis is a traditional Cretan taverna on Agios Antonios square in Sternes, on the Akrotiri peninsula outside Chania. Its guests are a mix of locals and visitors who find it on their phone, often in English, often on the way there. The taverna needed a site that answers the practical questions quickly and makes the place look as good as it is.

What I built

A light, bilingual site with Greek at the root and English at /en/. It opens on the facade and a single clear choice: see the menu or call to book. Below that sit the full menu, a photo gallery, guest reviews, opening hours and a map with directions.

Key features

  • Greek and English versions of every page, sharing the same images
  • Full menu written for people deciding what to order, not for the kitchen
  • Opening hours that show whether the taverna is open right now
  • Photo gallery served in two sizes so phones load the small ones
  • Google and Tripadvisor reviews linked from the page
  • Tap-to-call booking and one-tap directions to the square

Tech notes

  • Hand-written HTML, CSS and a little JavaScript: no framework, nothing to update
  • WebP images with small variants for mobile
  • Sitemap, robots.txt, web manifest, app icons and an Open Graph image for link previews
